Success Criteria:  use Storybird to write a creative story with rhyming words. WALT: Use and read rhyming words    WALT:  communicate WALT: Build vocabulary	Johnny collaborated with Natasha and Connected to his prior knowledge and to the pictures in the story.
Learning Observed
Johnny began to learn about Storybird when the Hickey hapu wrote the story ‘Quack the Cat’ together. Johnny was happy that Ms Wilkes made him his own account.  Some LH6 learners came to work with us and Johnny’s buddy was Natasha.  Natasha helped Johnny login to his Storybird account and helped him use the program so his funny, creative ideas could become a story. It was challenging for him to remember to try to use -at words in his story.  Johnny loved looking through all the pictures so it was good that Natasha helped him stay focused and he created two stories with her.  Natasha did most of the typing but all of the ideas came from Johnny and Nathan.  He has very good ideas and demonstrates a solid understanding that he is writing for an audience and that the purpose is to entertain.  He uses some appropriate and purposeful language features as well- such as metaphor, alliteration and rhyme. Measurement

NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Mathematics Measurement: Students will create and use appropriate units and devices to measure length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time. Patterns and Relationships: Students will generalise that whole numbers can be partitioned in many ways.

Learning Observed

In a measurement unit during iDevelop Johnny has been learning to identify different units of length.  He has been participating in a range of practical activities using both standard and non-standard units of measure. Johnny has demonstrated his curiosity by making estimations about the length of various objects using non-standard measures (e.g. how many giant steps to the door?), then carrying out investigations through practical activities in order to check his estimations. During the measurement unit Johnny is showing he is a capable learner by being able to use language, symbols, and text in order to measure the length of a particular object. Johnny is a connected learner, taking his previous experience with measurement and applying it to his current learning.

Evidence of learning

The cubes are best to measure because they were all the same size so our answers will be the same.

The Legend of Maui

Achievement Objectives from NZC:  The Arts; Level 1; Visual Art; Communicating and Interpreting. Students will share ideas, feelings, and stories communicated by their own and others’ objects and images.

Learning Observed

In iExperience Johnny has been learning about how myths and legends shape a culture.   Johnny was able to interact with the stories of Maui - a famous mythical New Zealander.  Learning how Maui found his mother, took fire, tamed the sun, and fished up the North Island, Johnny was able to connect these stories to things he already knew in order to participate fully in discussions. While learning about Maui and the Big Fish Johnny showed his capabilities by retelling the story to others (Maui’s brothers teased him, saying he was too young, and too small to fish with them, so one night Maui wove a fishing line and went out fishing on his own, only to hook the North Island.  Proving to his brothers that he was not too small to join them). Johnny actively participated and contributed in the activities, independently weaving a ‘sea’ background, and modelling a fish hook out of clay. Throughout the ‘Maui’ activities Johnny demonstrated that he was a curious learner by asking well thought out, relevant questions during discussions.

Evidence of learning

In this artwork Johnny has shown his understanding of the story of how Maui fished up the North Island.

Wolf Fact Find

NZC Achievement Objective:  Level 1 English; Speaking, Writing, and Presenting; Purposes and Audiences. Students will recognise how to shape texts for a purpose and an audience.

Learning Observed

In literacy Johnny has been learning to understand what he has been reading by summarising stories, and to find and record facts from nonfiction texts. Firstly, as a group we read stories about wolves and recorded the facts we found.  Discussions were then had to identify the difference between any facts and opinions in the text.  Johnny demonstrated that he was both collaborative and connected to his learning through his ability to join in group discussions and share his prior knowledge with others. Next, Johnny wrote the facts he learned about wolves into his literacy book.  Johnny demonstrated capability in learning by being able to remember what he had heard and learnt from others long enough to record the information in his book. Finally, Johnny published his work, using ‘wolf’ colours.  Throughout this learning Johnny demonstrated a high level of participation and contribution to his learning and the learning of others.

Evidence of learning

Wolves:  They live in the forest and are the biggest dogs.  Wolves can see in the dark.  Wolves have strong teeth.
